In the United States consumer sales promotions known as sweepstakes or simply sweeps (both single and plural) have become associated with marketing promotions targeted toward both generating enthusiasm and providing incentive reactions among customers by enticing consumers to submit free entries into drawings of chance (and not skill) that are tied to product or service awareness wherein the featured prizes are given away by sponsoring companies. Prizes can vary in value from less than one dollar to more than one million U.S. dollars and can be in the form of cash, cars, homes, electronics, etc. Sweepstakes frequently have eligibility limited by international, national, state, local, or other geographical factors. Sweepstakes are often referred by marketing promoters as second-chance sweepstakes when utilized in conjunction with the awarding of unclaimed prizes during instant-win promotions. MarketingSweepstakes with large grand prizes tend to attract more entries regardless of the odds of winning. Therefore, the value of smaller prizes usually total much less than that of the top prize. Firms that rely on sweepstakes for attracting customers, such as Publishers Clearing House and Reader's Digest, have also found that the more involved the entry process, the more entrants, in a similar way to casinos inventing games that appear to rely partly on skill. Answered by Mr. Prefect - Fri Jan 15 18:05:11 2010 If I win a sweepstakes prize, is it legal for them to ask me to send them money to receive my winnings? Q. I received a phone call saying that I have win a $325,000.00 prize from America Publishers sweepstakes. But in order to receive my winnings I would need to send them $595.00 for insurance and delivery. I should send the money through Western Union, to a Ruth Acosta at Santo, Dominican Republic. Is this a legal and proper procedure? Asked by oddman - Tue Mar 24 12:34:59 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are lots of great, real sweepstakes out there. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of scams. Here are a few things to look for if you are trying to figure out whether or not a sweep is legit: * Does the sponsor ask for any fees to ship or release your prize? It's a scam. * Does the sponsor want your bank account number or social security number in order to send you the prize? Scam. * If you "won" the International Lotto, Irish Sweepstakes, Coca Cola UK Contest, or any other sweepstakes you didn't really enter, guess what? You didn't really win. * Is the "win notice" addressed to you or is it generic? Is anything spelled wrong? Is the return email address from hotmail, yahoo.uk, or any other web-based email program? Scam. … [cont.] Answered by TellMeMore - Wed Mar 25 19:40:18 2009 Did someone win the Target sweepstakes for a chance to meet the jonas brothers and demi lavoto?
