A phenomenon (from Greek φαινόμενoν), plural phenomena, is any observable occurrence. In popular usage, a phenomenon often refers to an extraordinary event. In scientific usage, a phenomenon is any event that is observable, however commonplace it might be, even if it requires the use of instrumentation to observe it. For example, in physics, a phenomenon may be a feature of matter, energy, or spacetime, such as Isaac Newton's observations of the moon's orbit and of gravity, or Galileo Galilei's observations of the motion of a pendulum.

Use in gemology

In gemology a phenomenon is an unusual optical effect that is displayed by a gem. Play-of-color, labradorescence, iridescence, adularescence, chatoyancy, asterism, aventurescence, lustre and color change are all phenomena of this type.

Which optical phenomena causes the sky to appear blue?
Q. Which type of optical phenomena would best explain why the sky is blue? Reflection, Refraction, Diffraction or Interference? Why? I think it might be refraction. I don't want to hear about Rayleigh scattering I already know about that.

A. It's not refraction. It's largely Rayleigh scattering, sorry, with Mie scattering contributing. From : "Rayleigh scattering of sunlight in clear atmosphere is the main reason why the sky is blue: Rayleigh and cloud-mediated scattering contribute to diffuse light (direct light being sunrays)." From : "Scattering and absorption are major causes of the attenuation of radiation by the atmosphere. Scattering varies as a function of the ratio of the particle diameter to the wavelength of the radiation. When this ratio is less than about one-tenth, Rayleigh scattering occurs in which the scattering coefficient varies inversely as the fourth power of the wavelength. At larger values of the ratio of particle diameter to wavelength, the… [cont.]

Are the phases of the moon a periodic phenomena?
Q. Are the phases of the moon a periodic phenomena? Explain.

A. Yes, in fact there are 8 common phases, listed below. 1 Full=Moon 2 Gibbous (between Full and Half) 3 Half-Moon (look like half a circle) 4 Crescent (between Half and Dark) 5 New (Dark) 6 Crescent (between Dark and Half) 7 Half-Moon 8 Gibbous (between Half and Full) Full-Moon If we were to write this as a sequence we would get: F ---> G ---> H ---> C ---> N ---> C ---> H ---> G ---> F And this repeats over and over! For fun draw 8 circles next to each other and shade in each one correctly to match the sequence written above!
