From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Lighting or illumination is the deliberate application of light to achieve some aesthetic or practical effect. Lighting includes use of both artificial light sources such as lamps and natural illumination of interiors from daylight. Daylighting (through windows, skylights, etc.) is often used as the main source of light during daytime in buildings given its low cost. Artificial lighting represents a major component of energy consumption, accounting for a significant part of all energy consumed worldwide. Artificial lighting is most commonly provided today by electric lights, but gas lighting, candles, or oil lamps were used in the past, and still are used in certain situations. Proper lighting can enhance task performance or aesthetics, while there can be energy wastage and adverse health effects of poorly designed lighting. Indoor lighting is a form of fixture or furnishing, and a key part of interior design. Lighting can also be an intrinsic component of landscaping. From Wikipedia under the

Q. was wondering if there's any particular lighting that is better for illumination, eye strain, headaches, color of light, etc. Do some lighting sources flicker, causing eye strain? I'm wondering about incandescent, compact fluorescent, and LEDs, natural light, and candlelight. Seems natural light would be the best... however I do sometimes find it difficult to read outside on a really bright day, so maybe not. I also see an advertisement for Tensor brand full spectrum light, but I don't know what kind of bulb that has. Asked by Gene K - Thu Nov 1 11:36:25 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The best light source is one with a high CRI (color rendition index) value. A high CRI value produces the high contrast needed for task situations such as reading. Fluorescents typically have a much higher CRI than incandescents. LED's, which have a high CRI, are also being developed for task lighting. Avoid glare, such as being in direct view of a light source or light bulb when reading. If you are using light from the window to read, then read with your back to the window. Answered by prime8 - Mon Nov 5 09:14:07 2007 What is the best type of lighting for restaurant dining rooms? Q. This restaurant has no windows and lighting is an issue. We want a comfortable atmosphere with lighting that helps relieve the cave-like feeling the restaurant has with no windows. This is a high quality restaurant, so dim lighting is usually wanted, but we don't want the lighting to be too dim. any suggestions? Older customers might prefer a little brighter light so they can read the menus, while the younger customers might want dimmer lights to set a more romantic mood. In either case, I'd say you can't stick with one brightness setting, and must adjust as needed or if a customer makes a request. Answered by Chris - Mon Nov 2 20:11:50 2009 How many watts of lighting do I need over a dining table?
Q. I foolishly bought a pendant lamp with only a 100 watt halogen light bulb for my dining area. Now that I've decided to replace it with a bigger chandalier, how many watts of light should I be looking at? I do have a Lutron dimmer, so it'll be adjustable. Is total wattage even what I should be looking at? Is there some other measurement to consider? Because my dining room has a sloping roof, I can really only do a single chandalier or pendant lamp. A single pendant lamp will never be bright enough -- so that's out. Most chandaliers tend to have lamp shades that focus upwards, whereas I know lighting for a dining table should mostly focus downwards -- to draw people into the dining area. What are my options? For what it's worth, I… [cont.] Asked by Ferg2k - Sat Apr 8 23:03:50 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Wattage definitely is what we think of when we think of how bright a light bulb is... but that generally really is meant to indicate how much electricity the unit is converting to another form of energy (light/heat). You could use a 9 Watt fluorescent screw-in bulb that has the same brightness as a 40 Watt incandescent bulb. Anyway, what you need is, as you said, something that DOES direct light down to your eating surface... not up onto your cavernous ceiling. I actually believe that there is a pretty decent selection of chandeliers out there with lamp covers that direct light down... you just might have to shop around a bit. Have you considered a small track-lighting installation that would allow you to hang, say, three pendant… [cont.] Answered by A Designer - Sun Apr 9 01:17:04 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "lighting" |
