How long has your vacuum cleaner lasted?
Q. I'm in the market for a new vacuum cleaner and I just wanted to know how long other people have owned their vacuum cleaner. It seems like my family is cursed with vacuum cleaners that quit working after only two, maximum, three years. Is this normal? Are vacuum cleaners meant to die an early death so we are forced to keep buying new ones? Any suggestions for a good strong vacuum with a long life span?

A. I have a Hoover Fold Away Bagless that has is almost 6 years old. I paid about $60 for it and I love it! You can purchase replace filters for them or if in a pinch, you can clean the filter yourself.(I use my hubby's shopvac to clean mine.) It has on-board tools too.

What is the best vacuum cleaner for concrete floors?
Q. I am unfamiliar with vacuum cleaner brands or even if vacuum cleaners work on concrete flooring. Basically I am looking for something that will get all the dust and dirt up without having to mop every other week.
Asked by Ryan - Mon Nov 5 12:59:19 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I'm not sure about concrete floors but I just bought a new vacuum cleaner that works excellent on my tile and split brick floors not to mention the entire rest of the house! I bought a Eureka Boss Vacuum Cleaner. It had attachments for getting in cracks and crevices as well as for dusting your furniture and cleaning curtains/drapes. It sucked all the dirt up off my floors in the "bare floor" setting. Well worth the $150.00 I paid for it at Lowes! :) By the way, it was a "best buy" in the consumer magazines! Good luck!! Here is the website link to the same vacuum at WalMart...it's a little cheaper there!

Can a steam carpet cleaner replace a vacuum cleaner for general household cleaning?
Q. We are considering buying a steam carpet cleaner instead of a vacuum, since we live in the country and our carpets get quite dirty? Does anyone know if this will work? I have read you should vacuum first and then steam clean. But we don't want to buy both and we don't have a lot of storage space. Thank you for any answers.
Asked by travellingtheworld - Fri Jan 23 14:22:34 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I don't know about you, but I use a vacuum for a lot more than cleaning carpets. What about cobwebs, spider webs, bare floors, general dusting? I'd recommend getting a really good vacuum cleaner with a carpet beater brush, a canister one and not an upright since canisters are usually much more powerful, and it might help keep the carpets clean enough that you won't have to shampoo them often. If they really get ridiculously dirty in spite of a good vacuum, it's probably worth it to hire a pro once in a while. Their machinery does a much better job than what you can do yourself. You should be able to get a pretty good deal on a decent used very good quality vacuum at one of those stores that sells and services vacuums.

What is the best vacuum cleaner for laminate flooring?
Q. Most of our house has laminate flooring, which is easy to damage or scratch. What is the best type of vacuum cleaner for using on this floor type? Recommend models or makes would be useful. Thanks.

A. Canisters work way better on bare floors than uprights, because they are able to get under and around everything with ease. The Miele S4 Sirius has a great floor brush which is made for wood floors and it does a great job cleaning up. The parquet floorbrush is specially designed for hard surfaces as it features delicate bristles for a thorough yet gentle clean. It has a 90 rotation and is exceptionally agile at cleaning around obstacles such as table legs etc. It also has huge holes on the bottom so it does not push the dirt, it sucks it up. The vacuum itself has the new Vortex Motor which is super powerful but the machine itself is super quiet even on its highest setting. Miele makes wonderful products that are made to last 20 to 25… [cont.]

How do you repair a vacuum cleaner cord when its in 2 pieces?
Q. My vacuum cleaner cord got cut in 2. The plug and about 2 inches is now seperate from the cord. The manufacturer wants me to send it in and spend $110 for a new cord and labor. Is there another way?

A. You can replace this cord by yourself. Remove the cord. Take the piece(s) to your local Hardware store. (It is important to take cord with you, so the right wattage can be matched). I have replaced cords on sm. house appliances. It's really very simple to do. Good luck! :)

Can you recommend a good vacuum cleaner for a house with a dog?
Q. Our house is mainly carpeted, and we have a cat and a dog so we want a vacuum cleaner good for picking up hairs. Upright or cylindrical. Thanks!
Asked by Lydia - Sat Aug 23 07:23:34 2008 - - 21 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well - i bought a thinking that it would do the job and i'm sorry to say that i am more than a little disappointed with it. It shouldn't be used on expensive carpets or really cheap carpets because it makes them bare by pulling up the threads... It is hard to manoeuvre. Its pipe function is really fiddly and confusing. Its uniquely designed stand/release foot paddle is a bit hard to use. The roller at the front frequently become clogged. AND! I still find hair everywhere. I would suggest buying a vacuum more like this: Where you always use the pipe and can easily do the sofa and get under tables etc and use the head to rub up hairs. Maybe they have a dyson version?

Where can I find a replacement plug for my vacuum cleaner?
Q. One of the little metal pieces on the plug on my vacuum cleaner came off. I don't want to have to buy a new vacuum if I can just replace the plug. I would like to know where I can get the plug and how to install it. I was thinking OSH, or Radioshack, but neither seems to offer the product online.

A. Lowes, Home Depot or a hardware store. You would need to be able to strip the wires (remove the outer jacket to see the copper) and tighten the wires under some screws. You can get the tools at the store and I'm sure there will be some one there that can tell you how. (They might do it for you at the hardware store.) You could take it to a local vacuum repair shop and they should do it for $20.
